Gone are the days when boys called out to passers by to entice folks to buy newspapers. We live in a technological age where people get their news from electronic devices such as TV, iPhones, and computers.

What does that mean to you? If you own a business, it could mean a great opportunity to promote your products and/or services. The trick is to do it right. Make your message meaningful and useful to your market. Be real. People don’t want to see an ad they could see in the newspaper. Think about the messages you open in your e-mail. Think about the ones you delete before reading them. If your advertising is looking like the ads you delete then you’re doing it wrong. Don’t send anything you wouldn’t be interested in reading yourself.

Community Coolness
I’ve decided that besides promoting myself and my super-cool friends, I’ll be highlighting a different non-profit business or event. See the blue cartoon dude? Does he look a little familiar? Susan Bennett from the Port Huron Museum contacted me about doing a mascot for their exhibit that demonstrates simple machines. She called him Simon and described him as smart, cool and somewhat mischievous. While designing him I realized I already knew someone like that. Yes, that’s right, I modeled him after my husband. Recognize him now?

Simon’s Simple Machines is now open at the Port Huron Museum. The event opened on January 28th, and will continue until April 23rd, featuring a multitude of hands-on exhibitions and family-oriented activities. Group rates are also available for 20 or more. Click here for a PDF of Simon and his sidekick Maddie. They are having a coloring contest, so have your little one color it ahead of time and drop it off when you check out the exhibit!

Summer can NOT get here quickly enough. I can’t wait for deck parties and cook-outs. The events I attend are especially cool because most of the time they include live entertainment by my husband with his various bands. He began studying piano & music theory when he was 3! Since then he has become proficient in guitar, saxophone, bass, drums, and more.

Playing music is his favorite thing to do. Occasionally, he even teaches guitar to my hearing-impaired nephew. He’d choose playing music over anything. He is currently involved in many projects, including but not limited to jazz, reggae, classic rock, electronica, fusion, and hip-hop.

What does that have to do with summer? Well, it just so happens that he and his many bands are available at affordable rates. So, when you are planning the entertainment your Fourth of July soiree or any other summer event, who you gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS! ... ahem.
