Our Hands
If the human race had a logo, I think it would be handprints. They are the essence of what makes humans such incredible creatures. It has less to do with our opposable thumbs and more to do with self-awareness which only humans have (as far as modern science claims).
Beyond the science, the artistic nature of how human hands and fingerprints are completely unique to each person is amazing. In life, it is our most basic signature.
In the past I’ve been asked to do art projects at events where I interact with the guests. My favorite is the handprint painting. I’ve done it a few different ways, but the largest piece created thus far has been for the Grand Opening of the Dow Youth Center in Sarnia. The event’s attendees were employees, people who had contributed to the creation of the Youth Center, and those who would be benefiting from it. I started by painting a background that flowed through three 24x36” canvases. As folks milled around, they would stop to add their own unique handprint to the painting. Pictured is the result.
The event doesn’t have to be as big as a grand opening; I’ve also done them for birthday parties, our local arts council’s annual gatherings, and my family’s Christmases, to name a few. If you would like to commemorate your event in a unique timeless way, e-mail me!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my wonderful husband Sadaat for editing my semi-monthly newsletter. I’d almost call it “translating” because as an artist I tend to stray into the metaphorical a little too much. Thank you Mr. Smarty-Pants!
P.S. Because I couldn’t have Sadaat edit my “thank you” to him, I am not responsible for any spelling or grammatical errors. :) |
